Amit Kumar

India


Passionate about the healthcare challenges facing India – particularly relating to accessibility to healthcare and transition of information between healthcare professionals –  Amit jointly initiated a venture, GimmiMED, aimed at connecting healthcare providers (from doctors to pharmacies and test labs) to patients through a mobile app, and combining OCR + AI technologies to digitize medical records. Amit’s start-up idea was selected in two Israeli accelerators and won a best pitch award at a startup hackathon.

Amit is also a Ph.D. student who is working as a research assistant at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, where he led the in-vitro research in the lab for over four years, working on memory formation in Olfactory and motor cortex, that resulted in two peer-reviewed journal publications and six conference articles. Amit also worked as a visiting research scholar at the University of Texas.

Amit graduated with a BSc. in Physics and a Masters in Physics from IISER in Kolkata, India and is pursuing his Ph.D in System Neuroscience in the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion, Israel. During this time, he also received many awards and scholarships such as The INSPIRE Fellowship (2009-2014) from the Indian government that is awarded to the top 10,000 students in India.

He is currently involved in promoting Israel-India ties through his university by serving as a Technion Ambassador to India, connecting the Technion to schools and colleges in India and promoting study opportunities at the Technion to students in India.

While in India, Amit also co-founded SPIE (International Society for Optics & Photonics) student chapter at IISER-Kolkata, India and led it to become the largest student chapter in Asia within a year, successfully raising two million rupees for various SPIE events during his two-year tenure.

Besides work and school, Amit enjoys cooking, traveling, world cinema and nature photography.
